Urban Legend of Humans Licking Essay -- Urban Legends

Humans Can Lick Too I collected the story on Saturday, October 9th in my dorm. It was late at night, which added to the effect of the story. The storyteller is a student at the University. He is 17 years old, is from Rockville, Maryland, and is Methodist. He is half Sri Lankan and a quarter Irish and Palestinian. His father is a diplomat and works for the state department, and his mother is a homemaker. The story, as told by the student, is as follows: There once was a girl who lived with her parents in a nice little town. Her parents went out for the night, leaving the girl home alone. She did have her dog with her though, which was a big dog that made her feel safe. She was fairly young, around 13 years old, so her parents told her to make sure all the doors and windows were locked so no one could get in. She did as she was told, but for some reason a window in the basement was stuck, and she could not close it. Because of this the girl simply decided to do the next best thing and locked the basement door so in case someone got in, they could not get to her. After a few hours the girl went to bed, sleeping with the dog next to her bed to make her feel comfortable. However, the girl woke up during the night to a dripping sound. She figured she had left the water on or that there was a leak in a pipe, but she was too tired to go see what the problem was. Being home alone made her a little nervous though, so she put her hand next to the bed to let the dog lick it. She went back to sleep only to wake up again in an hour to the same dripping. She became annoyed but still went back to sleep, letting the dog lick her hand once again. She woke up again in the morning just as her parents were getting h... .... If the story was told in a monotone or was obtained in transcript, it would not be nearly as effective. Due to the fact that the teller of the story was a 17-year-old male, it can be inferred that all of society has an underlying fear of people who can cause them harm. I do not believe that this story actually occurred, but the performance made it seem somewhat believable. However, because of the lack of details, such as where the incident occurred, names of the characters, and when it took place, the story seemed fictional. Regardless of whether this story has factual basis or not, as I listened, I was very disturbed and I cringed at the end. In my opinion, the performance was extremely effective because hearing someone talk about something that seems as if it could actually happen is more affecting than someone telling a story that involves the supernatural.

Earthquake Assignment

Earth Science 1 October 29, 2012 Homework Assignment 1. Explain how you should react or what you should do when you feel an earthquake if you find yourself in each of the following scenarios. Do not exceed the space provided. a) Indoors: I will stay calm and drop to the ground. I will take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture. I will hold on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near me, I will cover my face and head with my arms and crouch in the corner of the building. b) Outdoors: I will move away from building, streetlights, and utility wire. If I’m in the open I will stay there until the shaking stops. c) In a moving vehicle: I will stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. I will avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. I will proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. I will avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake. d) Trapped under debris: I will not light a match or move about or kick up dust. I will cover my mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. I will tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate me. I will Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause me to inhale dangerous amounts of dust. 2. What are the main things that you should do after an earthquake hits in the area where you are staying? In particular, discuss what you should do if you find yourself in each of the following scenarios. Do not exceed the space provided. ) Aftershock: When it is safe to move, I will exit my home. I will help my neighbors who may need assistance. I will give first aid when appropriate. I will not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of further injury & call for help. * b) Tsunami: I will go to a designated public shelter if I have been told to evacuate or if I feel it is unsafe to remain in my home. I will text SHELTER + my zip code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest she lter in my area (example: shelter 12345). c) Electrical system damage: I will not stand in water. If safe to do so, I will turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker. If the situation is unsafe, I will leave my home and call for help. * d) Gas leakages: If I smell gas or hear a hissing or blowing sound, I will open a window and leave immediately. If I can, I will turn off the main gas valve from the outside & call the gas company from a neighbor’s residence.

Have you ever thought that your world was perfect, with everything the way it should be, and nothing that could ever make it fall? Well, is your government corrupted, do you lack needed resources, or do you have a failing security? Great societies fall because of political corruption, the lack of resources, and a failed security system. These are a few reasons why Rome, Nazi Germany, The Indus Valley people, and The Maze Runner societies are nothing but stories now. One reason why great societies fall is because of corrupt leaders. In Maze Runner, a book written by James Dashner, two of the leaders in this society go completely crazy. This influences the opinions of the other members of the area and causes conflict and confusion among them. This caused a large gap to form in the peoples’ trust. It also lead to the downfall of their political system. Political corruption does not just happen in dystopian literature. It happened during the time of Nazi Germany. Hitler took power in the society and used that power against other races and religions living in that area. People then took action against the Hitler and the Nazis. This began World War ll, which the Nazis lost, causing the society to fall. In both the world of Maze Runner and Nazi Germany, political corruption played a large part in their downfall.
